Il nome del gruppo deriva dalla parola che in mwdglingua inglese significa "gomito" ed è stato scelto perché mwdwMichael Gambon in un episodio della serie televisiva mweamweqThe Singing Detective (trasmessa su mwegBBC One nel mwew1986) afferma che mwfaelbow è "la più bella parola della lingua inglese" (mwfqthe loveliest word in the English language)cite-ref-1[1].

Acclamati per il loro sound innovativo, hanno ricevuto delle ottime critiche da parte di grandi artisti come Blur, R.E.M. e U2. Tuttavia al loro grande successo di critica non è seguito un grande successo di fan, al di fuori dei confini britannici..

Il 9 settembre 2008 hanno vinto la 17ª edizione del mwjaMercury Prize, uno dei più prestigiosi premi musicali della scena britannica. Il 12 agosto 2012 si sono esibiti durante la mwjqcerimonia di chiusura dei Giochi della XXX Olimpiade a mwjgLondra il 12 agosto 2012.

Nel novembre 2013 pubblicano un mwkaalbum dal vivo con relativo mwkqDVD dal titolo mwkgLive at Jodrell Bank, nel marzo successivo pubblicano il loro sesto album in studio, mwlamwlqThe Take Off and Landing of Everything, che raggiunge la prima posizione della classifica mwlgOfficial Albums Chart.

Nell'ottobre 2015 mwmaGuy Garvey debutta da solista con l'album mwmqCourting the Squall.

Nel marzo 2016 viene annunciata l'uscita dal gruppo del batterista Richard Jupp, sostituito prima provvisoriamente e poi in pianta stabile nel 2019 da Alex Reeves.

Il 3 febbraio 2017 esce il loro settimo album in studio mwnqmwngLittle Fictions. Il disco viene anticipato da tre singoli, mwnwMagnificent (She Says) uscito nel dicembre 2016, mwoaAll Disco e mwoqGentle Storm, diffusi nel gennaio 2017.

L'11 ottobre 2019 esce il loro ottavo album in studio: mwowmwpaGiants of All Sizes; l'album è stato preceduto dai singoli mwpq Dexter and sinister, pubblicato il 1 agosto 2019 e mwpgEmpires il 21 agosto dello stesso anno.
